Brick & Story, with support from SmithGroup, led community engagement efforts for the Alexandria West (AlexWest) Planning Process which explored ways to update the long-term vision for the 1992 Alexandria West Small Area Plan and integrate the 2012 Beauregard Small Area Plan. The AlexWest project specifically focused on targeted outreach to several multifamily housing communities in the study area in an effort to engage renters, households of color, low-income families, and other stakeholders who may not typically engage in city processes.

The team’s efforts included hosting several community pop-ups and interactive workshops to engage residents either at their apartment communities or at community hubs (e.g. schools, community centers, churches) nearby. We also collaborated with local organizational partners to help increase awareness about and participation in the planning process.

Engagement topics included affordable housing, transportation and accessibility, sustainability, and community and economic development. The efforts from this targeted engagement fed into a larger citywide engagement process that was running concurrently.
