Report Summary: Across the real estate development industry, community engagement has evolved from a procedural requirement into a defining component of successful projects. Increasingly, developers operate in environments shaped by growing expectations for transparency, accountability, and tangible community benefits. At the same time, many communities carry longstanding distrust rooted in racially discriminatory planning and development practices including redlining, urban renewal, displacement, and disinvestment. Recognizing this legacy and contemporary reality is an important first step in building trust and creating successful projects that contribute to equitable development outcomes.
