Westhaven Master Plan

Brick & Story supported the Charlottesville Redevelopment and Housing Authority (CRHA) in partnership with Arnold Design Studio in engagement efforts for the master plan to redevelopment of the Westhaven public housing community. The Resident Advisory Committee (RAC), was central to our work. The RAC is group of dedicated residents who represented the voices of the Westhaven community and helped guide the redevelopment process.

The engagement process aimed to ensure all residents could participate in planning, reach beyond the RAC, and involve youth, working families, and non-English speakers, while also educating new residents and the broader Charlottesville community about Westhaven’s history.

Key strategies included a survey to properly understand how to better engage residents, a project website serving as a centralized hub for updates, and training RAC members to door knock, which helped them engage their community more effectively and increase participation in the process. Brick & Story and CRHA also hosted open houses, attended key community events, and organized a bus tour for RAC members to Richmond to visit and learn from other redevelopment projects.
